Aalto University School of Economics

Aalto Doctoral Program in Business

Aalto University School of Business – formerly Helsinki School of Economics (HSE) – was established in 1911. Today, the School of Business is the leading business school in Finland and one of the top schools in Europe. It is strongly dedicated to research.

The School of Business is located in Central Helsinki. Helsinki is the 3rd most livable city in the world according to a 2013 report by Monocle Magazine and the 8th in the Economist Intelligence Unit livability ranking 2012. As for Finland, the country is  consistently ranked highly in quality-of-life studies. It was the best country in the world according to a Newsweek 2010 study.

The School of Business offers an English-language 4-year doctoral program for those seeking academic careers or high level positions in business. Both a PhD and a DSc degree can be completed. In 2013, 22 doctors graduated from the School.

New doctoral students are selected in an application process once a year. For 2014, the deadline for applications was January 15. More information about the student selection practices can be found on this website, at “Applying for doctoral studies”, see on the left.

The quality of the doctoral dissertations is high. Most of them are written in English and the main results are often published as articles in international refereed scientific journals. In order to guarantee a high international standard the School encourages every doctoral student to publish at least one article in some refereed international journal. The pre-examiners and opponents of dissertations are normally from well-known foreign universities. Their assessments and high grades are a sign of an internationally high standard.
